Guardiola impressed by Roberts

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was impressed by the performance of Celtic winger Patrick Roberts, who netted against his parent club in Tuesday's 1-1 Group C draw at the Etihad Stadium.

The 19-year-old, who joined the Bhoys from City on an 18-month loan in January, opened the scoring after five minutes of the Battle of Britain encounter, although the Scottish champions' lead lasted just three minutes as Kelechi Iheanacho drilled home an equaliser.

"He scored a good goal. We know his quality, he worked really hard and defended well and I’m so happy for him," the Spaniard said.

"We are going to talk about him at the end of the season. He has good potential."

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers was impressed by the coolness Roberts showed in jinking past Gael Clichy before drilling a low finish past City goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

"It was a brilliant goal. He’s great in that situation even with two men around him, but it was a great bit of skill to come inside," Rodgers said.

"I thought he was going to hit it earlier but he whipped it into the bottom corner. it was a great finish by him."

Roberts has been a regular starter for Celtic since his move north of the border, scoring eight goals in 22 SPL appearances, and Rodgers advised the teenager not to rush his return to his parent club.

"I don't think he had a point to prove," the Celtic boss continued.

"He showed his quality, that he's in the right place at this point in his career. He certainly has the quality [to play for City]. At his age you need to be playing games, he's dealing with the expectancy here very well."
