Guardiola: We are almost in CL quarters

Pep Guardiola admitted his Manchester City side are "almost in the quarter-finals" after they hammered FC Basel 4-0 in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg clash in Switzerland.

The Premier League leaders almost put the tie to bed within half an hour in Switzerland as Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero all scored before the 24th minute.

Gundogan added his second on 53 minutes to seal a crushing victory and the second leg, which you can watch live on the eir Sport pack on Wednesday 7th March, should be a routine task for City.

"An excellent result," Guardiola told BT Sport. "We are almost in the quarter-finals. Champions League is always 180 minutes and we will take the game seriously but it's an excellent result.

"Ilkay Gundogan is an extraordinary player. Last season we missed him a lot with an injury for six months and that's why we are so satisfied, not just the quality but personality to play.

"We are still in February and in the Premier League we are in an amazing position and we are almost in the quarter-finals, we are in one final (EFL Cup) and on Monday we have the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Game by game."

Gundogan meanwhile feels City can still improve.

"The result was maybe perfect but the way we played there are still plenty of things to improve," he said.

"It's Champions League and it's always tough - we didn't concede which was the most important thing after these goals.

"It seemed comfortable but it was tense and Basel had chances to score."

The Champions League continues on Wednesday night with Real Madrid's Round of 16 first-leg tie against Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain at the Santiago Bernabeu, live on eir Sport 2 [kick off 7.45pm]. Liverpool's trip to Portugal to face Porto is also on the eir Sport pack, live on BT Sport 2 [kick-off 7.45pm].
