Lewis Hamilton looked to re-ignite the defence of his F1 drivers championship title as he went fastest in second practice ahead of Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix.
The Briton was almost a quarter-of-a-second faster than his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg who currently leads the standings by eight points following three consecutive victories.
Rosberg had been quickest in the first practice session, but Hamilton responded in style in the sweltering heat at Sepang International Circuit.
The reigning world champion was 0.223 seconds quicker than his tema-mate and main rival for this year's championship, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel trailing by 0.661s in third ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fifth fastest ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez and McLaren's Fernando Alonso who is trialling an updated Honda engine.
The day began in dramatic fashion with a dangerous pit fire involving Renault's Kevin Magnussen.
The Dane managed to jump to safety just two laps into the opening session as a leaking fuel pipe caused his car to catch fire. The pit crew worked frantically to extinguish the flames while also trying to empty the fuel tank.
Magnussen took no further part in the first session, but did return to complete 19 laps in second practice.
