Hamilton set for grid penalty in Belgium

Lewis Hamilton is likely to suffer a grid penalty at Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton endured a difficult start to the season as he encountered a number of engine problems, which means he has used more engine components than planned.

Under Formula 1 regulations, drivers are permitted to use a certain number of components before a grid penalty is imposed and Hamilton has already used the maximum five items of two elements of the turbo hybrid engine.

Hamilton is likely to incur a ten-place grid penalty in Belgium but he could be demoted a further ten places if Mercedes elect to fit his car with additional parts.

Mercedes have yet to decide whether to take the penalty in Belgium or at next weekend's Italian Grand Prix, although it looks increasingly likely that the world championship leader will take the hit at Spa-Francorchamps.

"(An engine penalty) is likely and confirmation is expected tomorrow (Thursday)," Mercedes said.

After a slow start to the season, Hamilton has won six of the last seven races to lead Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by 19 points in the drivers' championship.
