Harte happy to avoid back door

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte is pleased to be preparing for an Ulster SFC semi-final instead of the All-Ireland qualifiers.

The Red Hand have found themselves in the first round of the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers for the last four years but an 11-point defeat of Derry means they are preparing for an Ulster semi-final against Cavan.

They will find themselves in the qualifiers if they fail to beat Cavan on Sunday week but for now Harte is happy not to have to think about the backdoor system.

“It is a great change not to be there. We have been there for so much now this last number of years,” Harte told The Irish News.

“It was terrific to let that be, and think about an Ulster semi-final, something that we haven’t had the privilege of doing for some time.

“It is such a different place to be, and it was nice not to have to think about the Qualifiers or where you might have to travel to.”
