Hulkenberg to leave Force India

Nico Hulkenberg is to leave Force India at the end of the season.

Hulkenberg drove Force India in 2011 and 2012 before joining Sauber for one season in 2013, only to return to Force India for a three-year spell from 2014.

He has been heavily linked with a move to Renault with reports suggesting he has agreed a two-year deal with the team with the option of a further year.

His last race for Force India will in Abu Dhabi at the end of the 2016 season.

"Everybody at Sahara Force India wishes Nico well as he embarks upon a different path in Formula One," team principal and managing director Vijay Mallya said.

"Having spent five years with us, Nico has become a great friend and contributed a huge amount to the team’s success. He’s an outstanding driver, who has scored more points for this team than anybody else.

"While it’s true we will miss Nico, we respect his decision to explore fresh opportunities and it would be wrong to stand in his way.”

Hulkenberg has already picked up 54 points this season and is currently ninth in the drivers’ standings with four races remaining.

Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
