Hurling: Tipp's Ryan names three debutants


Tipperary manager Michael Ryan has named three debutants in his starting line-up for Saturday's All Ireland SHC Round 1 qualifier against Westmeath.

Ryan hands Daragh Mooney, Tomas Hamill and Joe O'Dwyer their first Championship starts at Semple Stadium, while Donagh Maher, Patrick Maher and Niall O'Meara also return.

Goalkeeper Darren Gleeson, who was handed a three-and-a-half year suspended prison sentence on Tuesday after admitting a charge of obtaining €10,000 by deception in 2013, Cathal Barrett, Michael Cahill, Seamus Kennedy, John McGrath and Sean Curran drop out of the line-up that started the 2-27 to 1-26 Munster semi-final defeat to Cork at Semple Stadium on 21 May.

Westmeath goalkeeper Paddy Carroll will make his senior championship debut in tomorrow's All-Ireland SHC Qualifier against Tipperary in Thurles, replacing Paddy Maloney between the posts.

Manager Michael Ryan makes four changes to the side that started Westmeath's 4-15 to 1-20 Leinster quarter-final defeat to Offaly in Mullingar.

Defender Tommy Gallagher is ruled out after suffering a cruciate ligament injury, so Liam Varley makes his first competitive start since 2016 at wing-back. Derek McNicholas returns from suspension to start in the forward line, and U21 star Niall Mitchell also come in, with Conor Shaw and Cormac Boyle dropping to the bench.

Offaly manager Kevin Ryan makes three changes to the side that lost 0-33 to 1-11 to Galway in the Leinster semi-final, for Saturday's hurling qualifier clash with Waterford in Tullamore.

James Mulrooney comes in at right corner forward in place of of Sean Cleary, Pat Camon replaces Enda Grogan in the full-back line while Aidan Treacy starts at number six, with Sean Ryan moving to midfield in place of Padraic Guinan.

Waterford make just one change from the side beaten 0-23 to 1-15 by Cork in the Munster semi-final at Semple Stadium on 18 June, with Darragh Fives starting in place of Stephen Bennett, who was handed a retrospective one-game suspension for pulling on Damien Cahalane's face-guard during the semi-final.
