I'd stop playing if United couldn't catch City, says Pogba

Manchester United's Paul Pogba says he'd “stop playing” if cross-city rivals Man City were unbeatable in the Premier League this season.

Ahead of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford this Sunday, with United trailing City by eight points in the league table, the French midfielder has issued a battle cry to his team-mates that Pep Guardiola’s City side are most certainly not out of sight in the battle for domestic honours this season.

"If I don't believe [that United can catch City], I stop playing football now," said Pogba. "They need to win because they know that we are behind and we are closing and closing.

"Unfortunately I won't play, but I will be there to help the team mentally. I need to be there to boost the team and hopefully it will help.

"Manchester City against Manchester United has always been a big, big derby. One city, two clubs.

"It's going to be a big atmosphere in the stadium and a big game with a big team and big players, so that's the game you want to play. I have complete trust in the team."

Pogba will miss the tie after receving a red card in his side’s 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates following a studs-up challenge on Hector Bellerin, as he serves a three-game suspension, meaning he will return to action for United’s EFL Cup clash with Bristol City on 20 December.
