2016 Champion Hurdle winner Annie Power will miss the Cheltenham Festival after picking up a leg injury.
Annie Power was re-routed to the Champion Hurdle last March after stablemate Faugheen suffered a season-ending injury and she proved a worthy deputy as she became the first mare since Flakey Dove to win the two-mile championship.
She went on to win the Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle at the Grand National meeting but she has not been seen since.
Willie Mullins had hoped to run her in a mare’s race at Punchestown on February 22 before sending her to Cheltenham but injury means she will miss both targets.
"Annie Power worked yesterday and worked well but I wasn't happy with her last night, and she was found to have a leg injury this morning," Mullins told the Racing Post.
"It's not the same injury as before but it will definitely rule her out of Cheltenham and possibly the rest of the season, although it is too early to say for sure at this stage."
Earlier this week Mullins had raised the possibility of Annie Power and Faugheen going up against each other in the Champion Hurdle but that decision has now been taken out of his hands.
Faugheen is expected to make his seasonal return in Sunday's BHP Irish Champion Hurdle.
