Ireland have won the Clermont leg of the Rugby Europe Sevens Grand Prix, beating hosts France, Spain and Russia en route to victory.
Anthony Eddy’s side beat Russia 17-14 in the decider in Clermont, with Jordan Conroy scoring two tries, sandwiched between an effort from Nick Timoney.
The Irish had side had topped their pool with three wins on Saturday, before beating France 7-5 in the quarter-finals on Sunday morning. Ireland then saw off Spain 17-5 in the semi-finals with a solo try from Conroy inspiring them to victory.
The win moves Ireland two points clear at the top of the overall Rugby Europe Grand Prix Series standings, on 56 points, ahead of Russia on 54, while Spain lie third on 52. The final event of the series takes plae in Exeter on 15-16 July.
The win in Clermont means Ireland are on the verge of qualification for next summer’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Fransisco. The top-two ranked teams will qualify for the event, meaning it goes down to the Exeter event in two weeks’ time.
The win in Clermont also means that Ireland are now qualified for the World Sevens Series qualifying tournament in Hong Kong in 2018. Two European teams qualify for that event, and with Ireland now on 56 points they are guaranteed a spot, with Germany next in those rankings on 34, and Italy in third on 22, and out of the reckoning.
