Ireland name experimental side for Italy clash

Ireland will field an experimental side for their first World Cup warm-up clash against Italy at the Aviva on Saturday.

Joe Schmidt is keeping his cards close to his chest but obviously wants to look at a few players in different positions before naming his final squad ahead of the tournament next month.

There are two uncapped players in the matchday 23, with Munster lock Jean Kleyn set to start and clubmate Mike Haley on the bench.

Joey Carbery partners Luke McGrath in the half-backs, with Chris Farrell set to feature alongside Garry Ringrose in the centre. Farrell normally features at outside centre for Munster, so his inclusion here at inside centre is interesting as Schmidt looks to assess all his options.

Jordan Larmour is set to start at full-back, with Dave Kearney and Andrew Conway on the wings.

Rob Herring starts at hooker alongside new Ulster clubmate Jack McGrath and Leinster’s Andrew Porter, with veteran Devin Toner partnering Kleyn in the second row.

The back row sees versatile Jordi Murphy at number eight, with Tommy O’Donnell and skipper Rhys Ruddock on the flanks.

Niall Scannell, Cian Healy, John Ryan, Iain Henderson, Tadhg Beirne, Kieran Marmion and Connaught’s Jack Carty join Haley on the bench.
