Ireland to face Denmark in World Cup play-offs


Ireland will face Demark in November's World Cup play-offs, with the second leg to be played at the Aviva Stadium.

The first leg will take place in Denmark on Saturday 11 November, with the return leg at the Aviva Stadium on Tuesday, 14 November.

"Being unseeded it will be a difficult tie," Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said.

"I know the manager [Age Hareide], we used to play together [at Norwich City]. It will be interesting.

"Momentum is very important. We won our last two games to get here. We want to try keep it going."

Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland will face Switzerland, with the first leg at Winsdor Park, Sweden will meet Italy and Croatia will take on Greece.

The eight countries were split into two pots, with the seeded teams n Pot 1 and the unseeded teams in Pot 2.

The seedings were determined by Fifa's world rankings, with Switzerland [11th], Italy [15th], Croatia [18th] and Denmark [19th] all in Pot 1, while Northern Ireland [23rd], Sweden [25th], Republic of Ireland [26th] and Greece [47th] were all in Pot 2.

In 2006, 2010 and 2014, three of the four teams seeded for the play-off prgressed to the World Cup finals, but Ireland qualified for Euro 2016 through the play-offs by beating the seeded Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Northern Ireland v Switzerland
Croatia v Greece
Denmark v Rep of Ireland
Sweden v Italy

The games will take place on a home and away basis, with the first legs between 9 and 11 November and the second legs between 12 and 14 November, and the team drawn first will play the first leg at home.
