Ireland up to 30th in the world

Play-off win fires Boys in Green up world rankings

The Republic of Ireland's fine recent form has seen them jump up to 30th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

The Boys in Green moved up 12 places in November after victories over world champions Germany, Georgia and Gibraltar earned them a place in the Euro 2016 play-off.

Now victory over Bosnia at Lansdowne Road and a draw in the away leg has helped Martin O'Neill's side move up another another 12 places to 30th, as well as booking their place in France this summer.

Northern Ireland are one place above their southern neighbours after booking their first tournament appearance since 1986.

The Republic's opening game in June comes against Sweden, now ranked below them in 35th, while the second game is against the number one ranked team, Belgium.

Ireland's third game in the group stages sees them pitted against 15th-placed Italy.
