John goes for Gold and Monalee improving

Sizing John will not be seen between now and his defence of the Cheltenham Gold Cup come March.

Jessica Harrington will not target the Irish Gold Cup, a possibility for stable ally Our Duke, but instead till have a fresh Sizing John when Cheltenham comes around.

The eight-year-old had been in the frame to run in at Leopardstown on February 4 but his trainer told the Daily Mirror: "He's going to go straight to the Gold Cup.

"I'd rather go there fresh and well. He's in good form, he looks good and he's been back cantering this week."

Sizing John's unbeaten run came to an end in the Leopardstown Christmas Chase when he bombed.

Harrington said: "Nothing came to light that you could hang your hat on. I just think the race came too soon.
"It didn't look like he had a hard race (at Punchestown), but these things can be deceptive - both him and Djakadam (John Durkan runner-up) ran flat at Leopardstown last time."

Meanwhile, trainer Henry De Bromhead told At The Races that he was happy with the progress Monalee, who fell at Leopardstown, was making. He may run next in the Woodlands Park 100 Club Novice Steeplchase on January 28 at Naas.
