Johnson sacked by Sunderland

Adam Johnson has had his Sunderland contracted terminated with immediate effect.

Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of sexual activity with a child and one count of grooming at Bradford Crown Court on Wednesday, but he faces two counts of sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16, which he denies.

On Thursday, manager Sam Allardyce admitted the player would not be in the squad for the visit of Manchester United to the Stadium Of Light but a short time later the club released a statement confirming his departure.

"In light of Adam Johnson's guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect," the statement read.

"The club will make no further comment."

News of Johnson's sacking came just hours after boot sponsor Adidas announced that they had terminated their contract with the former England international.

"We've terminated Adam Johnson's contract with immediate effect following his guilty plea on Wednesday. We've issued letters and verbally confirmed that with his management," a statement from the company read.
