Keane called into England squad

Burnley's Michael Keane has been called into the England squad for the 2018 World Cup qualifying double header against Malta and Slovenia.

Keane has been called up by interim manager Gareth Southgate as cover for Glen Johnson, who has withdrawn through injury.

Johnson was a surprise inclusion in the 23-man squad having not featured for England since the 2014 World Cup, but the Stoke full-back has been forced to withdraw from the panel due to an unspecified injury.

With Johnson ruled out, Southgate has turned to Keane, who made 16 appearances under him for the Under 21s, and the centre-back will join up with the rest of the squad at St George's Park on Tuesday.

Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
