Keane included in Ireland squad

Skipper set for final appearance

Robbie Keane has been included in the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming games against Oman and Serbia.

Following Martin O'Neill's squad announcement, Keane confirmed that he will bring his international career to a close at next week's friendly against Oman at the Aviva Stadium, which is live on eir Sport 1.

The Los Angeles Galaxy striker has scored 67 goals for Ireland and won the last of 145 caps when he was introduced from the bench in the 30 defeat to Belgium at Euro 2016.

While Shay Given has called time on his international career, John O'Shea has made himself available and he has been included in the 28-man squad despite picking up a groin injury during Sunderland's defeat to Middlesbrough on the opening day of the season.

He will be assessed by the FAI medical team along with Seamus Coleman and Jeff Hendrick when they report to camp on Sunday.

Defender Shane Duffy is suspended for the 2018 World Cup qualifying opener against Serbia.

"After the excitement of UEFA EURO 2016 it seems as if we had little time to enjoy some excellent performances during that tournament," said O'Neill.

"The World Cup qualifying campaign is already upon us and we have a difficult set of fixtures in the coming months.

"The visit of Oman to the Aviva Stadium reminds us of the game they played in Dublin two years ago. That took place immediately before we embarked on our European qualifying campaign.

"This game is ideal preparation for our first qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade a few days later. The Oman game also gives us the chance to play in front of Ireland supporters who enhanced their own reputation in France. We are looking forward to both games."
