Kenin and Riske advance in Mallorca Open

US rising star Sofia Kenin has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Mallorcan Open, with Alison Riske reaching the last-16.

Kenin was first in action on Pista Central Court, where the 19-year-old lost the first set to Belgium's Alison van Uytvanck, 24, before going on to regain control of the tie, reaching the last eight on a 2-6 6-4 6-4 scoreline. The world 91 seed taking two hours and one minute to win the tie against the world No 44.

Kenin was followed on Pista Central by her compatriot, Alison Riske, 27, who booked her spot in the last-16 on the Balearic Island with another come-from-behind win. Riske lost the first set of her clash with Angelique Kerber, 30, of Germany, before going on to totally dominate her opponent in a 5-7 6-2 6-1 victory, the world No 61 causing a major upset in dumping out world No 11, and double Grand Slam winner, Kerber, in one hour 58 minutes.

Tatjana Maria, 30, of Germany also  advanced to the quarters, defeating fellow country woman Carina Witthoeft, 23, in straight sets 7-6 6-3, in just one hour 31 minutes.

Kenin will face the winner of No 1 seed Caroline Garcia of France and Johanna Larsson of Sweden, and Maria will clash with the winner of Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic. Riske will meet Polona Hercog of Slovenia in the last-16.

The Mallorca Open from the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club in Mallorca, Spain, will be shown live on BT Sport on the eir sport pack between 18-24 June.
