Everton manager Ronald Koeman must make a decision on James McCarthy fitness following his return from international duty.
McCarthy missed Everton's last six club games following groin surgery and Koeman voiced concern after he was called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the recent international break.
Having come through training without any problems McCarthy started both 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Moldova, playing the full 90 minutes and 81 minutes respectively.
Koeman, however, believes the player has been 'over-loaded' and he is not sure if he will be fit for Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
"(With) James McCarthy, it's a little bit more difficult because he was, of course, after 5-6 weeks out of football after his surgery, I know he played the full game after three group sessions with Ireland and then he played the second game and is massively over-loaded and we have to make a decision tomorrow if he's really fit to be part of the team," Koeman told reporters ahead of the weekend's game.
"It is ridiculous that he has surgery, five to six weeks out, three training sessions, plays 90 minutes and then, after three days, plays another 80 minutes … Play him for 45 minutes, 60 minutes, but not 95 minutes after five to six weeks out, the second time 80 minutes! You are killing the player.”
Romelu Lukaku and Phil Jagielka both picked up thigh injuries on international duty but they are fit to face City.
