Koeman not confident of Barkley deal

Everton manager Ronald Koeman is not confident Ross Barkley will still be at Goodison Park next season.

Barkley's current contract runs out in June 2018 and Koeman has previously warned the England midfielder that he risks being sold if he does not commit to the club before the summer.

Last week the Dutchman told the 23-year-old that he had a week to decide whether to sign a new deal and speaking ahead of Sunday's game against Arsenal the manager admits he does not know if he will stay at the club.

When asked if he is confident Barkley will stay at Everton, Koeman said: “No. No because it’s a long time that he is thinking about his future. I’m not worried because I like to work with players who like to stay.

"It’s not about his decision, we will go on looking for players in that position and even when he stays, there’s more competition for him next season.”

He added: "I spoke to the player, the board spoke to the player and his agent. We will see what the answer will be.

“We need an answer after the weekend, I don’t know what will happen if he doesn’t give any answer. I don’t know."
