Lamine Kone has signed a new five-year deal at Sunderland.
Kone was the subject of much interest from Everton during the summer but he remained at the Stadium of Light beyond the transfer window as the Black Cats rejected a £18million bid.
After warding off interest from their Premier League rivals, Sunderland opened contract talks with the 27-year-old and he has agreed a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.
“Lamine is an important player for this club and I made that clear to him from the outset," manager David Moyes commented.
“He has only been playing in the Premier League since January, but in that time we have already seen what he is capable of. The challenge for Lamine now is to build on what has been a very positive introduction to English football and to continue to improve and grow as a player.”
Kone joined Sunderland in January from French side FC Lorient.
