Lamine Kone will begin talks over a new Sunderland contract next week, according to Black Cats' boss David Moyes.
Sunderland turned down a £20m offer from Everton on the final day of the transfer window, amid speculation that the Ivory Coast international was keen to force through a move to Goodison Park.
But Moyes has persuaded the £6m signing from Lorient to return his focus back to his Black Cats' career, and hopes the 27-year-old will sign a contract extension next week.
"I’ve had nothing but smiles from Lamine," Moyes, whose Sunderland side play his former club Everton on Monday night, said.
"It’s always difficult. I’ve seen it a little bit before.
"I know what happens, once the window shuts, it changes everything. I hope he will have signed a new contract shortly. I’ve not got the news to say he has yet. But there have been plenty of discussions. I think there are some already pencilled in for next week some time.
"We hope to do that. He’s still got four years left on his contract, so it’s not as if we are scraping around because we are short of time.
"He could have been an Everton player this weekend, but I wanted Kone to stay all the time. There was never any hint that we wanted anything else."
