World number one Caroline Wozniacki is out of the Australian Open after Britain’s Johanna Konta booked her fourth round place with a fine display over the Dane in Melbourne.
The 25-year-old, who was seeded ninth, has won nine games consecutively and recorded the win over the 17th seed 6-3 6-1 in 75 minutes.
Konta will look to build on her eight straight win after her recent Sydney International win and will face Ekaterina Makarova in her next game.
"We played in the fourth round here last year and I think it was 8-6 in the third, so I am expecting a battle," Konta said.
"It will be tough, just like against anyone in any match, you don't have any easy matches anymore.
"I definitely played at a high level today, Caroline really makes you work for it and doesn't give you anything so I am happy with my level.
"I knew it would be incredibly tough and I wanted to assert myself from the get go and play the match I wanted to play. What an amazing crowd, you guys were incredible."
Six-time champion Serena Williams made light-work of fellow American Nicole Gibbs to book her fourth round spot.
The 35-year-old - who is searching for her 23rd Grand slam single title - overcame Gibbs 6-1 6-3 in 63 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.
The world number two will meet Czech Republic’s 16th seed Barbora Strycova in the next round.
"I don't have anything to prove in this tournament here. Obviously I'm here for one reason," Williams said.
"But at the end of the day, this is all a bonus for me and I look forward to playing Strycova. I'm ready for her."
Meanwhile, Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni booked her last-16 place with a win over 3-6 6-2 6-3 win over Greece's Maria Sakkari.
This is the veteran’s first recorded win at the Australian Open since 1998.
The 34-year-old now faces American qualifier Jennifer Brady after the world number 116 overcame Elena Vesnina in the third round, 7-6 (7-4) 6-2.
