Kvitova injured in knife attack
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova has been injured in a knife attack at her home.
The 26-year-old suffered an injury to her left hand in what her publicist Karel Tejkal has been described as a burglary at her home in the eastern Czech town of Prostejov.
She has been treated by doctors but Tejkal confirmed that the injuries were not life-threatening.
"It was a random crime, nobody was going to attack or rob her as Petra Kvitova," Tejkal said.
Shortly after the attack, Kvitova posted a message of thanks on her Facebook page.
“Thank you for all your heartwarming messages. As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife," she wrote.
“In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this.
“Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery.”
Prior to the attack the left-hander, who won Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, had announced her decision to withdraw from the Czech Republic team for next month's Hopman Cup because of a foot injury.
