Three-time champion Petra Kvitova defeated former winner Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1 7-6 to advance to the second round of the Connecticut Open.
Bidding for a fourth New Haven title, Kvitova proved too strong for Radwanska and she needed just an hour and 28 minutes to see off her longtime rival on Stadium Court.
In an one-sided opening set, Kvitova broke Radwanska twice but the second was a tighter affair with the Czech forced to come from 3-1 down before taking it to a tie-break, which she won 7-3 to set-up a second round clash against Zarina Diyas, who defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-3.
Johanna Konta is also through after a 6-2 7-5 win over Laura Siegemund.
Konta looked comfortable in the first set, racing into a 4-0 lead, and she had little trouble in serving it out. The second was not as straight forward as Siegemund found back until successive double faults handed Konta a crucial break at 5-5 and the Briton served it out to set up a meeting with Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro.
Elsewhere, Ekaterina Makarova overcame Karolina Pliskova 6-1 6-3, while Magdalena Rybarikova progressed after CoCo Vandeweghe retired injured in the third set.
