A late header from Arsenal substitute Olivier Giroud denied Manchester United a deserved win at Old Trafford as the sides drew 1-1 in the early morning kick-off.
Arsenal, unbeaten since the opening day defeat to Liverpool, missed out on the chance to go top of the Premier League table, but manager Arsene Wenger will gain plaudits for his crucial substitutions as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain crossed for Giroud to rise above Phil Jones and head past United goalkeeper David de Gea.
United seemed on course for all three points following Juan Mata's opener on 68 minutes, with the United playmaker brilliantly drilling home Ander Herrera's first-time cross from the byline.
It was a dull game up to that point, with the only moment of note in the first half when Nacho Monreal made a rash challenge on Antonio Valencia in the Arsenal penalty area, but referee Andre Marriner immediately waved play on.
The draw, United's third consecutive at home following Old Trafford draws with Stoke City and Burnley, extends manager Jose Mourinho's unbeaten run in the Premier League against Arsene Wenger to 12 matches, following five wins and six draws while at Chelsea.
