Lauda: Mercedes face huge decision

Niki Lauda has intimated that it could be February before Mercedes decides on Nico Rosberg's replacement for 2017.

Mercedes were left stunned by Rosberg's decision to retire from the sport less than a week after winning his maiden title in Abu Dhabi, but the world champions had hoped to have appointed his successor by Christmas.

The team confirmed last week that it would be January 3 at the earliest before they were in a position to announce their 2017 driver line-up but this could be delayed until the end of the month as the team faces a 'huge decision' with regards to Rosberg's replacment.

Mercedes junior driver Pascal Wehrlein and Williams' Valtteri Bottas are in the running for the seat, although Mercedes would have to buy Bottas out of his current contract in order to sign him for 2017.

"It could take until the end of January before we know which way we will go. We are not yet that far and we don't know yet. We hoped to make it sooner, but they are quite complicated negotiations," Lauda told Servus TV.

"Basically, there are just two ways to go: a young driver like Wehrlein, who could become a star or could not, or we an experienced man like Bottas. We are far from being ready with these considerations - this is a huge discussion. "
