Joleon Lescott has joined Sunderland for the remainder of the season.
Lescott has been without a club since his release by Greek club AEK Athens in November but he has been training with the Black Cats in a bid to maintain his fitness.
The 34-year-old will provide defensive cover as Sunderland bid to move away from the relegation zone.
"Joleon Lescott has joined Sunderland AFC on a short-term contract," Sunderland confirmed in a statement.
"The defender has put pen to paper on a deal with the Black Cats until the end of the season.
"He will wear the shirt number 15."
Lescott worked with manager David Moyes during his time at Everton and the centre-back is looking forward to getting to work with the team.
“We spoke last Thursday, he (David Moyes) asked me how I was. I was asked to come up, so I came up on Friday, did some work with the fitness coach and that was it. I am delighted to get it done," he told the club’s official website.
“He is a well experienced manager, the situation is not great but if anyone can get us out of there he can. I have played with a few, there are a few familiar faces here so that helps.
“I am excited to play at the Stadium of Light, there’s always an intense atmosphere. I have not had too many great results here so hopefully that will continue for the away team while I am here.”
