A stunning second successive 65 from David Lingmerth has left him two shots clear heading into the third round of the Quicken Loans National.
The Swede was flawless as he registered five birdies and not a single dropped stroke at TPC Potomac and he sits on 10-under-par with closest challenger Geoff Ogilvy on -8.
2006 US Open champion Ogilvy was in cracking form as well, matching the leader's 65, although his card featured six birdies along with a bogey on the 15th.
Both players took full advantage of the more favourable conditions early in the day to give themselves a healthy cushion with American Daniel Summerhays a further two strokes adrift of Ogilvy on six-under.
Unheralded duo Arjun Atwal and Sung-Hoon Kang are a shot further back on -5 while the American quarter of Ricky Barnes, Harris English, Johnson Wagner and Bryson DeChambeau join Canadian Nick Taylor in the top 10 on a mix of -4 and -3.
Ireland's Seamus Power carded a 69 to lie in a tie for 31st place on +1.
Having failed to win a tournament since the Barracuda Championship in 2014, Ogilvy was delighted with a return to form.
"I'm not done yet," Ogilvy said. "Feel like I've got a lot of good golf, so a win would be great. That gets me back to the Masters and effectively a three-year exemption."
