The bout between former world lightweight champion Richard Commey and Jackson Marinez has been elevated to main event status tomorrow night following the postponement of the Smith Jr. v Vlasov fight. It will be LIVE on eir sport 1 from 3am.
Scheduled for ten rounds at the MGM in Las Vegas, victory would propel Commey towards another world title shot later this year.
Commey (29-3, 26 KOs), from Accra, Ghana, has been a lightweight since turning pro in his home nation in February 2011. He fell just short in his first attempt at a world title, dropping a split decision to Robert Easter Jr in September 2016 for the vacant IBF title.
He won the IBF title in February 2019 with a second-round stoppage against Isa Chaniev, then defended it in June with an eighth-round knockout of former world champion Ray Beltran.
His title reign ended that December when he suffered a second round TKO defeat to Teofimo Lopez. This is his first fight since then.
Marinez (19-1, 7 KOs), from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, entered 2020 largely unknown to fight fans. That all changed in August when he outboxed the unbeaten Rolando Romero over twelve rounds. However, the judges disagreed with most boxing observers and Marinez lost by unanimous decision.
Trained by Robert Garcia, Marinez now gets a shot at redemption and would put himself in the picture for a world title shot with victory over Commey.
