Liverpool’s Adam Lallana will miss the start of the Premier League season after being ruled out for two months.
Lallana injured his thigh in the first half of the Reds' Audi Cup final defeat to Atletico Madrid last Wednesday, with a scan back in Liverpool on Thursday revealing the full extent of the issue.
Lallana’s injury will mean he also sits out Liverpool’s Champions League play-off clashes with Hoffenheim.
However, he should be fit to return for England’s October World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.
"This is certainly not news we would have wanted," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told the club's official website.
"Unfortunately, the damage is such that it will likely mean Adam is out for a couple of months not weeks, so I think we can pretty much rule him out of August and September.
"Beyond that we will monitor and wait and see. He is a boy with a world-class attitude to everything professionally and he has always come back in good time from injury setbacks since I have been here, so we will see."
Lallana was a vital cog in Klopp's Liverpool machine last season, playing 35 times and scoring eight goals.
