Ireland forward Shane Long has been ruled of Monday's crucial World Cup Qualifier against Wales with a hip injury.
The Southampton striker played 82 minutes of Ireland's 2-0 Group D victory over Moldova in Dublin on Friday, and trained with the rest of the squad on Sunday, but the FAI confirmed on Monday morning that the Tipperary native would not feature against the Welsh.
Ireland manager Martin O'Neill was set to start Long in Monday's must-win game, even though 30-year-old has failed to net for club and country in 24 matches and 237 days.
O'Neill may now select West Brom winger James McClean up front against the Welsh, alongside Friday's two-goal hero Daryl Murphy.
However, Nottingham Forest striker Murphy, 34, may struggle to play two full games in four days, so Preston frontman Seanie Maguire or Aston Villa's Scott Hogan may feature off the bench.
Victory over Chris Coleman's team at the Cardiff City Stadium will guarantee Ireland second spot in Group D, and a place in November's play-offs.
And O'Neill's side could even top the group and qualify automatically for Russia 2018 if group leaders Serbia are beaten by Georgia in Belgrade.
The Republic of Ireland's Under-21 European Qualifier Group 5 qualifier against Israel at Tallaght Stadium on Monday, 9 October will be shown live on eir Sport 1 from 3.25pm [KO 3.30pm].
