Lukaku hat-trick sinks Sunderland

A second half hat-trick from Romelu Lukaku hand Everton all three points as they ran out 3-0 winners against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Belgian, who had not scored in 13 games for Everton before Monday night and was linked away from Goodison Park in the summer, produced three goals in eleven minutes to leave the Toffees third in the Premier League table, two points off league leaders Manchester City.

Sunderland’s wait for their first league win of the season goes on as they struggled to make an impression in the final third and failed to create any real opportunities throughout the game

New Everton signing Yannick Bolasie was impressive for the Toffees early on and it was the French winger’s cross that found Lukaku who could only direct his header towards young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

David Moyes’ will be heavily dependent on loanee Adnan Januzaj and veteran striker Jermaine Defoe for goals this season and it was the latter who could have opened the scoring early on with one of Sunderland’s only real first half opportunity.

Despite trying to catch Everton on the counter throughout the tie, it was the home team who were caught on the break from a corner, Idrissa Gueye’s through ball to Lukaku smartly finished by the striker in the 59th minute.

Lukaku scoring goals could be the difference for Koeman’s men finishing in the top four and he doubled his tally eight minutes later when he headed home a Bolasie cross from close range.

The former Chelsea man compounded more misery on the deflated Sunderland fans when he neatly tucked away Kevin Mirallas’ long ball with 20 minutes remaining.

Everton will want to build on Monday's win when they travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday whilst Sunderland will look to claim their first three points when they visit title challengers Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
