Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku kicked him in the face "on purpose" during Sunday's Premier League game at Anfield.
The incident happened just before half-time of Sunday's goalless draw at Anfield, when the Belgium international's heel connected with the Croatian defender's face as he took evasive action following a tackle.
Lovren is convinced that Lukaku deliberately trod on him, even though referee Martin Atkinson took no action at the time, and the Football Association decided not to impose any retrospective punishment.
"I made a tackle and felt he was over me and he could just have moved away," Lovren told a news conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League game against Maribor in Slovenia, which is live on BT Sport ESPN on the eir Sport package [kick off 7.45pm].
"My honest view is that he did it on purpose. It was on the face.
"If he did it normally, you would apologise after that. I saw that he was nervous during the game so maybe that was the reason."
And when asked whether he was surprised that Lukaku would not face any further punishment, Lovren said: "This is not my decision. I cannot say I am disappointed but it is what it is.
"We need to move on. That is football, part of the game."
