MacNiallais deals Donegal blow

Donegal's hopes of becoming All-Ireland contenders once again were dealt a blow with the news that Odhrán MacNiallais has decided to absent himself from selection for the coming season.

The 24-year-old denied rumours that he was heading to the USA but did confirm that he is stepping away from the football panel for a year.

“I’m taking a year out, but not sure about the American part,” he told the Donegal Democrat.

“There was no fall out or anything with management or players; it is just for personal reasons.”

MacNiallais broke into the Donegal first team in 2011 but due to injury he missed their historic capture of Sam Maguire the following season but has since become an integral part of Rory Gallagher's set-up.

Leo McLoone's retirement has already weakened the panel and with MacNiallais now excluding himself for the 2017 campaign, Gallagher's task has become an even tougher one.
