Man City go top after beating West Ham

Raheem Sterling netted twice, as Pep Guardiola's side moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over West Ham at the Etihad Stadium.

City made it three wins from three Premier League matches under new manager Pep Guardiola, although there were given a scare in the second-half, losing their way after the impressive John Stones limped out with a knee injury.

City were utterly dominant in the first half, 2-0 up after only 18 minutes, with Sterling drilling home the opener on eight minutes from a Nolito cut back, then Fernandinho heading home a second ten minutes later from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick from the right.

West Ham were clinging on until the second half, when Michail Antonio outclimbed Gael Clichy at the far post to head home Masuaku's deep cross just before the hour mark.

City seemed becalmed by the fightback, but the exertion of chasing shadows caught up on West Ham, and Sterling netted his second goal in injury-time with a clever finish past James Collins along the goal-line from David Silva's pass.

One cloud on the horizon for City may be a possible ban for star striker Sergio Aguero for a windmilling arm on Winston Reid in the 76th minute, that was missed by referee Andre Marriner, but picked up by the television cameras.

If the Argentine is retrospectively punished with a three-match ban, he will miss the derby against Manchester United on 10 September, as well as matches against Bournemouth in the Premier League and Swansea in the EFL Cup.
