Mannone out for three months

Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone has been ruled out for at least three months, manager David Moyes has confirmed.

The Italian hurt his arm in training on Tuesday and scans revealed he damaged elbow ligaments in the incident.

A decision on whether he will require surgery has yet to be made but Moyes has confirmed that he is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

"Vito has torn ligaments in his elbow. It's quite a severe injury and we are awaiting final assessment from the specialist on whether he will be operated on or not," Moyes said.

"It could be that it could be put in a brace and heal - that's what I am getting from the doctor - or it could be needing an operation, but it's a quite severe injury."

Although Moyes can call on England Under-21 international Jordan Pickford and Max Stryjek, the manager admits he will have to bring in a new goalkeeper before Wednesday's transfer deadline.

"We will need to bring another goalkeeper in, we know that. We have got a few days to do so and we'll get to work on that," Moyes explained.

"As you well know, we are working on other areas as well, so it's just added to the list a little bit."
