Marc Marquez dominated FP3 at the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Moto GP, a 1.7 second lead over Bradley Smith earmarking the championship leader as the form rider for the weekend of racing ahead.
An early morning downpour on the Austrian track meant that the surfaced was still wet, and despite the riders changing to slicks, the times in FP1 stood as the qualifying times for Q2.
Jorge Lorenzo set the early running with 1:33.938, before Valentino Rossi bested that with Rossi with a 1:33.382, with the Italian going into Q1 for the first time since the Australian GP last year. Rossi went faster again with 1:33.289, before Dani Pedrosa, Xavier Simeon and Alex Rins all out-timed him.
Lorenzo upped the ante with 1:30.687s, but with seven minutes to go Jack Miller and then Rossi again clocked faster times as the pack changed onto slicks.
Miller and Lorenzo exchanged fastest laps once more, with a final time of 1:26.496s proving enough for Lorenzo to top the standings, as rain at the close of the session ruled out any contenders clocking a faster pace.
