Martinez named Belgium manager

Former Everton manager Roberto Martinez has been appointed as the new manager of the Belgium national team.

Martinez has been linked to a number of vacancies since he was sacked by Everton in May but he has opted to step away from day-to-day management in order to take over from Marc Wilmots.

Despite guiding Belgium to the top of the FIFA world rankings, Wilmots lost his job in the wake of their 3-1 quarter-final defeat to Wales at Euro 2016.

Martinez began his managerial career with Swansea in 2007, guiding the club into the Championship before moving to the Premier League with Wigan in 2009.

The Spaniard guided Wigan to the FA Cup in 2013 but their celebrations were short-lived as just three days later the club were relegated from the top flight. Martinez left the club in order to join Everton where he spent three years before he was relieved of his duties on the back of a disappointing season.
