Valtteri Bottas is reportedly edging closer to a move to Mercedes with Felipe Massa in contention to return to Williams.
Massa retired at the end of the 2016 season but he is understood to have agreed to race on for at least another year to replace Bottas.
The 27-year-old is the favourite to replace Nico Rosberg at Mercedes following his shock retirement from the sport after winning the world title and Williams are prepared to let him leave as long as Massa postpones his retirement to drive alongside Lance Stroll for 2017.
Mercedes must buy Bottas out of his contract with Williams in order to secure his services and last week deputy team principal Claire Williams admitted they would only let him leave if they could sign a credible replacement.
It is understood the deal is close to completion but it will be after Christmas before either team is in a position to make a formal announcement.
