Matip to join Liverpool

Schlake defender Joel Matip is to join Liverpool in the summer, the German club has announced.

The 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer after rejecting a new deal with the Bundesliga outfit in favour of a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool were linked with the defender during the January transfer window, but Matip was keen to see out the remainder of his contract at Schalke and as a result he will join Liverpool as a free agent in the summer.

"I have always said I would only leave Schalke for one reason: to experience something new," Matip explained.

"Therefore a change within the Bundesliga was never a consideration. Although it has not been an easy decision to make I am convinced now is the right time to make this step.

"Schalke will remain a big family for me and I was always proud to play for this great club. Therefore I will do everything possible over the coming months to get the most out of this season."
