Jack McCaffrey has yet to speak to Jim Gavin about a potential return to the Dublin senior football panel.
McCaffrey took a break from inter-county football in March after completing four years of a medical degree in UCD, who won the Sigerson Cup for the first time in over 20 years under his captaincy, and went on to spend 11 weeks in Africa on ambassadorial duties for the charity GOAL.
He returned to Ireland in August but was not recalled to the panel for the latter stages of the Championship and he has yet to be invited back into the fold.
For the moment he is focusing on helping his club Clontarf but he is hoping to get the nod from Gavin to join up with the All-Ireland champions when they return to training at the end of the year.
When asked if he had spoken to Gavin, McCaffrey said: "No, I’ve been playing away with the club. No, I’m just doing my own thing with UCD now.
“I’m going to be in Dublin playing football, for somebody this summer, so I’d love to get back in."
McCaffrey wasted little time in returning to GAA after his adventures in Africa, winning a Junior 'E' hurling medal with Clontarf as well as helping the footballers earn promotion to division one.
While he has been away from the inter-county set-up for a year, McCaffrey is confident that fitness will not be an issue if he is recalled to the panel.
“I hope not, I’m playing away, obviously we are here at the Sigerson launch and you are playing away there with pretty much all the same lads. Everyone tends to be off the pace at the start of the year but, no, I hope not," he is quoted as saying in the Irish Examiner.
“I’m doing my own stuff but I haven’t got any programme as such. I haven’t (spoken to Jim Gavin) and I’m not sure what the procedure is. Obviously, this year is different with everything shifted two weeks because of the replay.”
