McCarthy out for three weeks

James McCarthy will miss up to three weeks as he recovers from groin surgery.

McCarthy missed the Toffees' 1-0 win over Stoke City last month and was eventually ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's games against Oman and Serbia due to a niggling groin injury.

He underwent surgery on his return to England and Everton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed he will be out of action for three weeks.

"James McCarthy has had groin surgery and will be out for three weeks," Koeman said.

Seamus Coleman is yet to feature for his club this year after picking up an ankle injury in pre-season but he captained Ireland in the 2-2 draw with Serbia in their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier and he is in line to start for the Toffees when they travel to Sunderland on Monday.

"Seamus Coleman was fit to play and he has come back without any reaction. He is now fit to start," Koeman said.

Everton currently sit fourth in the table after two wins and a draw in their opening three matches but Koeman is eager for them to build on their start.

"Everton needs to be fighting for Europe and I feel like we've got the team to do that. It's been an okay start but we need to continue," he explained.

"We still need time physically but that's no excuse not to win."
