McDowell to compete in Open

Graeme McDowell has been added to the field for this year's Open Championship at Royal Troon.

McDowell is currently ranked 76th in the world and he faced the possibility of having to claim one of the four qualifying places at the upcoming French and Scottish Opens in order to qualify for the major championship.

However, he has been added to the field as one of the highest-ranked non-exempt players and will tee-up at the Scottish course from July 14-17.

The R&A has published a list of alternates to ensure a maximum field of 156 at Royal Troon next month with Francesco Molinari, Ryan Palmer James Hahn, Gary Woodland, Patton Kizzire, Fabian Gomez, Jeunghun Wang, Scott Hend, Brendan Steele and Tony Finau all added to the field.

There are 21 spots available through qualifying on the PGA and European Tours as well as qualifying across Britain.
