McGregor granted boxing licence

Conor McGregor has been issued with a boxing licence in California, raising speculation of a possible fight with Floyd Mayweather.

McGregor made UFC history last month when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to become the first fighter to hold two belts simultaneously, although he was stripped of the featherweight belt earlier this week.

Rumours of a showdown with Mayweather have circled in recent months and news of his boxing licence will do little to end the speculation.

"He got a licence today and a federal ID. He's a California boxer now," California State Athletic Commission executive officer Andy Foster told MMAFighting.com.

"I'd love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We're happy to license him."

However, Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, believes McGregor's decision to apply for a boxing licence is 'all a game'.

"It's all a game. It's all a calculated effort to gain more fans," Ellerbe told ESPN. "He got a boxing licence. Congratulations to him.

"Conor McGregor can say anything he wants to, but he has a boss and his name is Dana White (the UFC president).

"He is under contract to the UFC, and if wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match, he can't because his bosses wouldn't allow that to happen."
