Conor McGregor is to fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12.
UFC 205 will be the first event in New York since the ban on professional mixed martial arts was lifted earlier this year and the lightweight championship bout between McGregor and Alvarez will be the main event at Madison Square Garden.
McGregor will be bidding to become the first fighter to hold world titles in two weight divisions.
“This is the fight the fans wanted and I’m excited that our very first event at Madison Square Garden will be headlined by Eddie Alvarez defending the lightweight title against Conor McGregor,” UFC president Dana White told ESPN.
“This card has three world title fights and is the best card in UFC history."
White had previously stated that McGregor would have to relinquish the featherweight title he won when he defeated Jose Aldo but the Dubliner will be allowed to hold onto the belt.
Alvarez knocked out Rafael dos Anjos earlier this year to win the lightweight belt and he will provide McGregor with a stern test at 155lb.
McGregor's fight with Alvarez will be live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
