McNamara names extended squad for World U20s

Ireland Under-20 coach Noel McNamara has unveiled his 33-man squad for next month's World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina.

Ireland won the Grand Slam earlier this year and will be hoping to build on that success when they travel to Argentina for the tournament, which gets underway on Tuesday, 4 June.

However, McNamara will be without several key men as out-half Harry Byrne, Leinster openside Scott Penny, wing Conor McPhillips and centre David Hawkshaw are all absent due to injury.

The squad, which features six uncapped players, will be reduced to 28 before they depart for the Southern Hemisphere.

With Hawkshaw missing, Leinster's Charlie Ryan has been named captain, with Munster's Craig Casey confirmed as vice-captain.

Ryan and Dylan Tierney-Martin are the only two members of the squad with previous experience of playing at the World Championships, having been part of the panel for last year's event in France.

“History has shown us that this is an attritional competition and it’s important that anyone who may take to the field in Argentina is up to speed with how want to play," McNamara said.

“With that in mind we have named an extended squad ahead of setting off in two weeks’ time.

“We have had some really positive sessions since the Six Nations, and with another camp coming up next week we will continue to build on preparations ahead of the first game against England.”

Ireland open their Pool B campaign against England on Tuesday, 4 June before facing Australia on Saturday, 8 June and Italy on Wednesday 12, June.
