Roscommon manager Kevin McStay believes reaching the All-Ireland quarter-finals is a 'critical requirement for 2017'.
After finishing third in Division One of the Allianz Football League, Roscommon took Galway to a Connacht SFC final replay before bowing out to Clare in the qualifiers.
Following their exit from the Championship joint-manager Fergal O'Donnell stepped down from his position to leave McStay in sole charge of the Rossies for 2017.
After a turbulent end to their 2016 campaign, McStay is eager to move on and has set his sights on retaining their Division One status as well as a lengthy run in the Championship.
“We’ll use pre-season and the FBD League to establish our national league panel. We’ll use the national league panel to establish our championship panel,” McStay told the Roscommon Herald.
“If someone gets injured or loses form, we’ll bring in someone from the under-21 development panel. We would see ourselves as being competitive in all national league games, something similar to last year.
“Retaining our Division One status would be very important but not critical. Reaching the Connacht final would be an absolute. Reaching the All-Ireland quarterfinal, one way or another would be a critical requirement for 2017.”
