Mercedes delay driver announcement

Mercedes will wait until early next year to announce who will drive alongside Lewis Hamilton for the 2017 Formula 1 season.

Nico Rosberg announced his shock retirement from the sport on December 8, less than a week after claiming his first world title.

Fernando Alonso, Max Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas have all been linked with the vacant seat but with all the top drivers under contract for next season, Mercedes face a battle to sign a suitable replacement for the world champion.

Bottas is the front runner to succeed Rosberg at Mercedes and the world champions are understood to have contacted Williams about the possibility of buying him out of his contract.

It remains to be seen whether Williams will part with the driver following Felipe Massa's retirement at the end of the season and Mercedes may have little choice but to turn to their 22-year-old development driver Pascal Wehrlein.

Mercedes had hoped to have completed the recruitment process by Christmas but the team does not expect to be in a position to announce their driver line-up until January 3 at the earliest.
