Messi, Ronaldo and Kane up for FIFA Player of the Year

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane have all been included on the shortlist for FIFA Men's Player of the Year.

Kane’s goalscoring exploits for Tottenham in being the Premier League’s top marksman for the season in succession have earned him his place on the list, while Real Madrid’s full-backs Dani Carvajal and Marcelo have both been named on the list alongside their team-mate and 2016’s recipient of the award – Ronaldo, as Real’s achivement in winning the La Liga and Champions League double is acknowledged.

Champions League runners-up, and Serie A winners, Juventus, are represented by Paulo Dybala and Gianluigi Buffon.

Messi's pivotal performances for Barca, which helped them to the Copa del Rey title, see the Argentine nominated. His former team-mate, and the world's most-expensive footballer since his €220m move to PSG, Neymer, is also on the shortlist.

Alongside Kane,  the Premier League is represented by Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal), N’Golo Kante (Chelsea), Zlatan Ibrahimovic (formerly of Man United) and Eden Hazard (Chelsea).

The final three-man shortlist will be decided by a public vote between 21 August and 7 September, combined with the opinions of various national team coaches and captains and a select group of media.
